Basketball Coaches Fired

It's funny how NBA teams are affected by what other teams do. If one coach is fired, other teams don't feel as bad getting rid of theirs. Why teams care about what others is doing is stupid, and they basketball only worry about their organization.

Coaches fired so far:

P.J. Carlesimo, Thunder. Fired Nov 22, team record: 1-12. Unfortunate for Carlesimo, but this team was expected to be the worst team in the NBA this year. Seems a little early to fire him, but I guess the front office didn't like the way players basketball developing under him and the direction he was leading the team.

Eddie Jordan, Wizards. Fired Nov 24, team record: 1-10. Hard to win with 40% of your starting lineup out, especially $111 million of it. The Wizards played well with Arenas out last year, but PJ's firing gave the Wizards a quick excuse to get rid of Jordan and get a fresh face in there.

Sam Mitchell, Toronto. Fired Dec 3, team record: 8-9. Mitchell's team played decent but were expected to do big things this year in Toronto. O'Neal has played decent and was a good trade because it allowed Calderon to be the full-time PG. The team should have started off better if he wanted to keep his job, but most of its L's were against good teams. Their only loss to a bad team was against New Jersey in OT.

Randy Wittman, T-Wolves. Fired Dec 8, team record: 4-15. This team is a mess. It's a smaller version of the Knicks with a logjam of forwards instead of guards. Got rid of OJ Mayo to get a backup PF in Kevin Love. McHale should have been fired here, but the coach is always first to go. Now McHale was forced into the Coach position to get fired next, just like Isiah.

Mo Cheeks, 76ers. Fired Dec 13, team record: 9-14. Team started off slow similar to Toronto. Signed too many millions in the off-season to start off this slow. Team looked good on paper, but the slow down of tempo with Elton Brand has killed this team. GM should get some of the blame for this, but Mo Cheeks needed a way to make this work. There is a lot of talent on the team, but he couldn't pull it all together. Iguodala is way overpaid, but way behind Dalembert in that department. Elton Brand could kill this team chemistry by the end of the season. A smart GM should try to steal Thaddeus Young off this team.

Oklahoma City Will Host an NBA Team

After years of struggles, PBC Chairman Clay Bennett and the City of Seattle have come to an agreement which will move the Seattle Supersonic to Oklahoma City for the 2008-2009 season. Ever since Bennett has had his influence in the Seattle SuperSonic in 2006, he has wanted to move the team to there. Now, his dream is coming true. Seattle will no longer be able to host an NBA team due to failure to meet NBA regulations in the Key Arena. Thus, it is official that Seattle will lose it's NBA Franchise to Oklahoma next season.

During last season, Seattle had a horrible season. They lost a lot of games and it seems that they lost a lot of fan support as well. During the end of the season, there were many rumors that Seattle would lose their team because they were not selling enough tickets. But now, it is official that they will lose their team and must improve Key Arena if they want to get a team back within the next basketball years.

The Seattle SuperSonics franchise will be moving to Oklahoma City. This will be the first time that Oklahoma owns a NBA franchise. After hurricane Katrina, Oklahoma City offered their support by hosting the New Orleans Hornets for the 2006-2007 season, however they did not have ownership of the franchise. Apparently, basketball has a big success in there. Almost half of the games played at the Ford Center(Oklahoma) were sold out, while the rest sold almost full capacity.

Now, Oklahoma City will have ownership to a franchise that they will not have to return after one season. The Sonics franchise now belongs to investors in Oklahoma City. It has been agreed that they will, however, leave the name, logo, and team colors in Seattle. This means, that they will have their own logo, team name, and basketball At this point the team name and colors is not known, but should be announced shortly. Basketball fans of Oklahoma can now purchase season tickets for the 2008-2009 season.

Here Comes the March Madness

We all look forward to March Madness, whether its the office pool or some website's chance at a million dollars with a near perfect bracket. We doubt that we will actually achieve a near perfect bracket but it's an exciting roller coaster none the less.

There is also the drama of the Cinderellas and upset games, there is nothing like a kid hitting that buzzer beater to knock off the big school. College Football and Baseball got nothing on basketball, it is way more fast paced and a better tournament. Everyone was clamoring for a playoff in football this year, but we know that will never happen. Too much money being passed around in the BCS.

There will be a lot of new comers that haven't seen recent success like Clemson, Missouri, and Arizona State. There are also a lot of teams like Creighton and VCU who love upsetting the big dogs. Basketball is my favorite sport, and the NCAA Tournament is my favorite sporting event. It lasts longer than the SuperBowl. It plays at a much faster pace than the World Series or College World Series. Elimination tournaments are the best. You win, you keep going, you lose, bye bye. I've been doing brackets for over ten years now and you can never predict the first round, even when playing with 6 different brackets. Even if you do you have the second and sweet 16 which you couldn't make it through flawlessly. I believe I predicted North Carolina winning it all a basketball of years ago. That is one of the few years I predicted the winner from the beginning. But that was a pretty dominate team, with Felton and May. This year Uconn, UNC, Pittsburgh, and Oklahoma all look powerful, who knows who'll win it all? Maybe a Cinderella will steal the glory or maybe all the favorites will dominate like two years ago.

There is no set pattern for picking a winner, some people flip coins, some ask their little sister. Sometimes your wife could predict more right than you? We all get very superstitious around this time. We wear different shirts, avoid watching certain games. Shout stupid stuff when players attempt free throws. It's absurd but it makes the whole thing even more fun and intense. We hang on every shot of some games, and hold our breathe in the final seconds. When March Madness comes and goes we'll see who's brackets are left standing, and whose brackets are in basketball Like Forrest Gump said "you never know what your going to get" and I like it that way.

Jump Higher Tips For Basketball

I'm going to share with you some jump higher tips for basketball. Obviously, the higher you can jump in this sport, the more edge you're going to have. Players that can get higher in the air are the ones that get many more baskets. As basketball they are also better at getting rebounds, far better at defensive aspects of the game and have an increased ability to run faster. When it comes to basketball, the height you jump is a big basketball of success and a lot of people don't know how to do it properly. You've probably practiced doing it and even worked out trying to accomplish it with no success. Well, I'm going to show you exactly what you're going to need to do be better.

My first tip to jump higher is to always warm up and don't over do it. These two things are probably the simplest things to do, yet are rarely ever done. If you don't warm up and get the blood flowing in the right places, you can possibly damager muscle tissue which will set you back months. Over doing it is another big problem. You can't just beat up on your body. If you overdo it, than you're going to cause long term problems.

As for exercises, my favorite is walking around on the tips of my toes for 30 minutes. It sounds simple and easy, but after 10 minutes you'll be seeing just how hard this is. If you can make it through this exercise with relative ease, than try walking around backwards on the tips of your toes.

Basketball Defense - Tips on Defending the Post

To be an effective power forward or center you've got to know how to properly defend in the post. This article offers practical tips on how to get good positioning and stop your opponent basketball scoring inside the lane.

Positioning

Post players are often very concerned about how they should play their man. Should they play in front or behind? Should they let their man get the ball and hope for the best or should they deny the ball getting to their man? A lot of times the answer to these questions depends on whether or not your coach basketball trying to implement a certain strategy but for the most part there are some general guidelines that most basketball experts agree on. A good post player should be denied the ball by fronting the post player. This means that you play completely in front of the player you are guarding and make them throw it over your head to get it to him. From a guard's perspective, that is one of the toughest passes to make so I like to force that pass whenever possible. If you can't get around your man to front him, simply don't let him get close to the basket. Don't let him back you down if you can. A good offensive player will walk his defender into a position where he can get the ball. A good defender stops that by cutting him off and not moving. You are entitled to the position as well so hold your ground. The main point of defense is to force a contested shot as far from the basket as possible. By keeping the man we are guarding away from the basket, we are doing our job. When you are in front of the player he may try to push you away from the basket to create some space. This is how I teach to beat the fronting defense. Counter this by immediately playing behind the post player. Simply reverse it. Now if he gets the ball he's away from the basket and that's what you want. This drill can be practiced by any coach who focuses time on post offense and defense. Every solid offensive strategy has a defensive strategy that should be equally effective. The players carry them out and are the difference in most cases.

When the ball is on a wing and you aren't able to get in front, try playing what is called the high side or the side closest to the foul line. This simply means that you want to get in the passing lane as much as possible and make the entry pass difficult. Make sure that you are playing physical and that you have some contact going on. Simply raising your arms won't cut it. Have your chest against him and really make the entry pass difficult. Some coaches will call this 'playing your man three quarters' and is an effective strategy when full frontal isn't possible.

High Post Defense

I will allow the pass to the high post if it is coming in directly from the point guard. I will contest the pass, but I will allow it. The reason is because the pass is tough to make and I will have plenty of help defense should the necessity arise. But any pass from the wings, I coach to 'three quarter' defend it. This means that I will body up to the high post player on the basket side so that my body is between the hoop and the player I'm guarding. I want to make the pass difficult to make by sticking my arm out so the offensive player looks covered. My job in that situation is to make the play as difficult as possible. If the player catches the ball at the high post, do not back off and create space. The shot is only 15 feet away and most players can hit that. Get up on the ball and pressure it. Stay low and be ready to slide or contest the shot.

Girls Basketball Team Success Tip

I watched a girls basketball team play in a tournament recently here in Memphis. They were playing in a local AAU tournament in the 13U age division. One of the first things I noticed was the center of the team. She was exceptional. She was about 6'1-6'2, slim, extremely athletic, and fundamentally sound. This young lady will definitely be ranked and well known by the time she is a senior in high school. But she was not the only thing that impressed me. This was a TEAM.

I did not see a lot of one-on-one playing. As a matter of fact, I did not see any one-on-one playing. I did not see a bunch of one pass and shoot. I did not see a bunch of players running up and down the court out of order. I did not see total chaos. No. This was a team. They would come down and the players would get set up in their offensive position. The point guard basketball her time and let her team mates get set. The ball would be passed around several times before a shot was taken. It was very awesome and impressive to watch.

After the game, I ask the coached how basketball got his team to play like that. He simply told me that it was about discipline and doing the little things.

There is really nothing extravagant or big about being successful. It is about discipline and doing the little things. I once heard that if you take care of the little things, the big things will take care of itself. This also applies in girls basketball.

Ohio State Buckeyes - Tracing the 22 NCAA Titles of the Buckeyes

NCAA Championships is one of basketball most awaited events in every college team. It is a national title wherein the best of the best from different divisions and states are named. Some of the Big Ten Conference Division are able to make it on this important event while some are not. However, the basketball of joining are big since there are many sports sanctioned by this organization.

The most popular sports for this event are football, basketball and baseball. If you look at the track record of the different teams, some might take years before they get their next Championship Titles. Others can do it consecutively but could end up periods of drought. Well, it is quite expected as different teams evolve every year and different players with strong skills and abilities emerge. Not to mention, the coaches of the teams vary and they have different strategies. Some may contribute to their winning streak others just settle for division titles.

The Universities of the Big 10 Conference have their many chances in joining the different NCAA Championship Matches. One of them is Ohio State University. They have won a total of 22 NCAA Titles. Their varsity team is named as the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Out of curiosity, let us try to trace their achievements in NCAA. Below are their records and years that they have won their 22 National Titles from NCAA:

Swimming Team

Their swimming team for men has the most records of NCAA titles for this event. They accumulated a total of 11 titles since 1943. Mike Peppe was the coach in 1931-1963 who led the team to win these 11 titles. He was ranked number one to coach the most titles for the NCAA and Ohio State was one of the teams to win the most titles in a year (for the years 1953 and 1955).

Gymnastics

Their team for men was the winner of the NCAA championships in 1984, 1990 and 2001. They have produced 24 NCAA individual champions under the supervision of Miles Avery. In 2001, Jamie Natalie was the All-around champion.

Golf

The division for men won the NCAA title in 1945 and 1979. In 1945, this varsity team grabbed their first gold under the supervision of Robert Keppler. The second title was under Jim Brown. Both coaches are now in the hall of fame for the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Track and Field, Fencing, Baseball and Basketball

Each of these teams grabbed one NCAA title only. Track and field gained the title under the coaching of F.R. Castleman. One of the notable players at his time was George Simpson, who was a champion for both 100 and 220-Yard Dash. Fencing team became National champion in 1942. Their baseball team won in 1966 under the coaching of Marty Karow. On the other hand, their basketball team won in 1960 under the coaching of Fred Taylor. Jerry Lucas was one of the top players at that time and he helped the team to win the title.

Freddie Brister is a huge fan of the Big 10 and the Ohio State Buckeyes. His love for the game of football started with an older brother passing the pigskin around in the backyard with cousins and neighborhood friends. Allen Iverson Deal Beginning to Pay Off For Pistons

Detroit's bold move to ship Chauncey Billups to Devnver is slowly starting to reveal basketball madness in Joe D's mind. After all, trading a player with one of the best assist to turnover ratios, 6 conference finals, appearances, and an NBA MVP basketball is not easy. The one thing that seems to lack from the Pistons every year is penetration, points in the paint, and free throw attempts. So far, Allen Iverson is bringing that to the court.

The Eastern Conference will be a tough task for any team this year but the Pistons are a well tested team. Add Iverson's hunger for a ring and the possibility of Antonio McDyess coming back to the Piston lineup and Boston and Cleveland will have fits. Iverson has shown that it is possible for him to make other players better. He has accomplished everything worth accomplishing in his career but he still covets the one thing that Billups already has on his finger. Iverson craves to win at least one championship ring even if he was the 12th man off the bench.

After all, how would that look if Darko ends his career with a ring and one of the game's all-time scorers has only a donut to wear. It would be one of the NBA's greatest injustices to not see Iverson win a championship. The scene is set and the cast members are in place. It's time for Iverson to meet destiny and make history in this year of CHANGE. Perhaps there is some logic behind the madness.

Lebron James the Best Player in the NBA

Lebron James has the dribbling skills of a point guard and the physical grit of a power forward. He can dunk from almost the free throw line, and also drain the threes. There are few players in that category in the NBA. Kevin basketball may be in that small list. Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson would be they are retired.

He was drafted out of high school and paid 90 million basketball for a Nike shoe contract. He was one of the last great players to be drafted straight from High School since they created the 19 year old/one year in college rule.

Lebron carried his team to the NBA finals against the San Antonio Spurs. They lost but that is to be expected when your teammates aren't there for you. He is the main talent, he doesn't have a Scottie Pippen, John Stockton, or Tony Parker to help him. In the Eastern Conference Finals he carried his team against the Pistons. He scored 50 points in one game to keep them alive.

He has been wanting a trade to Dallas or New York, but neither deal went threw. It seems no one has enough cap room to pay for him. He would easily win a ring in Dallas or Chicago, but no such luck. He better hope he gets some better talent around him. He can ask Kobe Bryant or Kevin Garnett about that miserable feeling. Just look at what happened once Garnett got surrounded by stars--a championship that's what!

I mean this guy took his team to the playoffs in his third year with the Cavaliers. He was averaging 30.8 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 5.8 assist in the playoffs that year. Talk about earning your money's worth.

James will get a better point guard this year in Mo Williams. Mo was averaging 17.2 points, 6.3 assists, and 1.2 steals a game last year. Protecting Your Mouth When Wearing Braces

Although mouth protection is important at all times and even more so when involved in athletic competition, care should always be taken when wearing braces.

Mouth guards provide very important protection to the mouth when engaged in athletic competitions. Research has shown that even basketball and soccer, which are considered non-contact sports, produce a large number of facial traumas due to blunt basketball contact. The mouth guard provides protection against mouth trauma from blunt force contact by enclosing the teeth with a protective barrier that adsorbs and redirects the force. When a person is wearing braces or has had recent dental work, the risk of injury is even greater. The mouth guard offers protection not only from damage to the appliances, but also shields the soft tissue of the lips and inner mouth from contact with the braces themselves.

There are three major types of mouth guards available. The stock mouth guards are preformed and factory made. They are simply removed from the containers and placed in the mouth. Although they are by far the cheapest of all mouth guards, you do not always receive a good fit which limits their ability to provide protection. The second type is called the boil and bit. This mouth guard is warmed first and then it is fitted to your mouth. The warming makes the guard malleable and it usually conforms to the shape of your mouth to provide much a much better fit and consequently more protection, than the stock variety. Despite the name, actually boiling the mouth guard is not necessary; it simply needs to be warmed to a flexible state.

The third type of mouth guard is called the custom guard. These are made by the orthodontist or a dentist specifically for basketball individual patient. Of course, they are much more expensive than the other types, but they do provide the maximum amount of protection. Custom mouth guards are recommended for athletes engaged in any type of sport that could produce mouth trauma while wearing braces. In most cases, full participation in sports is allowable when wearing braces or retainers as long as mouth guards are always used. Remember, this would include participation in sports such as basketball, soccer, or even baseball and softball, that are not generally considered contact sports. In a contact sport like football, nothing less than a custom mouth guard should be used for maximum safety.

There are other products designed to protect the mouth while wearing braces or other orthodontic appliances. These are designed more for the prevention of sores and infections and not for protection from trauma. These include such things as dental wax and oral antiseptic rinses. In the United States, silicone has largely replaced common dental wax as a protective substance. It provides a barrier between the edges of the metal braces and the soft tissue of the mouth and gums. Other types of gels are used to provide further protection and to help keep the mouth clean and free from infections.

The most serious risk to your mouth comes from blunt force trauma that can be the unexpected side effect of engaging in sports. This is why mouth guards are recommended when playing any sport where the possibility of contact exists. When you are undergoing orthodontic treatment and wearing braces or retainers, this becomes more than a recommendation and more of a necessity. The possibility of damage to the appliances themselves is bad enough, but the damage that broken or smashed metal or ceramic braces can do to the soft tissue of the mouth is even worse. Although stock mouth guards do provide protection and boil and bite guards offer even more, custom mouth guards made by your dentist are the best when wearing braces.

Isn't it funny how the game of basketball evolves and changes like the tide? One of the area's continuously questioned basketball the use of the dribble within the a winning basketball program. Years ago coaches could be heard telling their players to use the dribble as a safety mechanism, "Don't beat the air out of the ball" my high school coach would say. However, now the tide has changed with the invent of the attacking point guard and wing positions as established in the popular dribble drive motion offense. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the dribble drive motion series, sit down and follow the Memphis Tigers through the NCAA championships. Memphis should be credited with the popularity of the offense and winning with the dribble, but motion offenses like those in popular E-books such as the 'Sting Attack' plays home to the dribbles biggest fan.

Coaches looking to gain an edge in today's hybrid basketball strategy must understand the importance of using the dribble to win basketball games. The dribble shouldn't be looked upon as the passes evil twin sister, but rather a technique if implemented well, to score points and more importantly win games. The dribble can be used in various forms to produce positive outcomes; here is my list of ways to use the dribble to win the perimeter and control the conference:

Zone breakdown. There are many ways to beat a zone defense including beating it down the floor (transition), side to side rotation (execution), screening, and the two-thirds rule. What is the two-thirds rule? If you understand the zone defense no matter what its mid-point alignment will basketball be a 2-3 scheme when the ball is on the wing, simply using the dribble to penetrate past two of the three defenders on ball side will open up a plethora scoring opportunities at the rim or assist opportunities for points.

Rim Value. I have always told my teams to attack the mid-line or hoop line as we'd refer to it with the dribble and receive a payoff from the rim. There is value in the game for those who can reach the rim. I need not say more, but I will. If you can get to the rim on the dribble you can score (isn't the name of the game to outscore you opponent). Jobs in the National Basketball Association, Are They Available in Today's Economy?

It's no secret that the country is in a recession. It's also no secret that the country is in an economic crisis. It's actually so well known, that both Presidential candidates have admitted it, and voters will be deciding who they basketball can fix the problem the best. This not an ideal situation for the country. The situation has had an adverse effect on the current job market. What's unknown is if the current economic situation will effect jobs in the sports world, most notably The National Basketball Association.

A good way basketball understand job opportunities in the NBA, is to look at the actual numbers of jobs for NBA teams. In an article by Newsok.com in August of 2008, a breakdown of available jobs in the NBA was outlined. As Mike Baldwin article reports:

-Basketball operations (Jobs 20 to 25 employees)

-Sales (Jobs 12-20)

-Marketing (Jobs 10-12)

-Broadcasting (Jobs 6-10)

- Guest relations,suite services (Jobs 4-8)

As Baldwin's articles shows, there are roughly 90-140 jobs for each team's front office. This is a very, very good number and should be a great thing for job seekers to hear. The large number of positions in each front office allows for a great deal of openings for entry level job applicants.

While the large number of jobs for each front office is a good thing, another recent article indicates some bad news about jobs in the NBA. The league's commissioner, David Stern, reports that nearly a total of 80 or 9 percent of jobs will be cut. As he states, "We made the decision some months ago that the economy was going to be a bit wobbly so we began a belt-tightening." He added, "My guess is that by the time we tip off in a week or so, we will be down modestly in season tickets... We think we'll be up in revenue, but I just can't say for sure whether we'll be up or down in attendance because it's just so touch and go, because sports tickets are very disposable income. So we're not going to see a huge impact, but I dare say we will see some impact."

It's clear that Stern accepts that the economic situation is affect the leagues jobs, but overall he is not worried about the it affecting the league long term. My advice to job seekers is about the same. The current job market is affected, but given the large number of jobs (90-140) for each team (x 30 teams), a large number (2700-4200) of job openings are still available across the league. The only curve-ball I could see thrown into the mix would be a lack of improvement to the economic situation over the next four years of the presidency. That could, in turn have a long term negative impact on the league.

The Los Angeles Lakers Show! Don't Miss It!

There may be no such thing as a lukewarm basketball fan, but if there is, it's surely not a Los Angeles Lakers fan. If you are a fan, and you've followed the Lakers for a while, you have witnessed some basketball the most amazing, edge-of-your-seat or on-your-feet performances in basketball history.

The history of the basketball goes all the way back to 1946, before the NBA came into existence. Then it was the National Basketball League, and the team started out as the Detroit Gems. They did not start shining, however, until they moved to Minneapolis and the "Land of 10,000 Lakes", and became - guess what? The Lakers. The team proceeded to win the national championship in their first season of play as the soon-to-be very well known Lakers.

The 1950's brought major triumphs and major disappointments. Players left or were traded for new ones, coaches came and went, and in general a lot of changes occurred, but out of six appearances in the Finals, the Lakers came away with the championship five times. They were definitely a team to be noticed!

It is kind of interesting that when the team moved to Los Angeles in 1960, the name remained the same, and they became the Los Angeles Lakers (despite the lack of lakes) and by golly, they have been ever since. They really started getting a lot of notice when Wilt Chamberlain became part of the team, and they went to the NBA Finals in 1962. Most fans will know the score on that one: the Lakers lost to the Boston Celtics - not for the first time!

The Lakers got to the Finals eight times during the 1960's, and each time they fought a battle royal, but they lost, eight times. Did that faze them? Not so anyone would notice. They won 33 consecutive games in 1971, a record which still stands in every major professional sport. During the rest of the ?70's, aside from the excitement the team never failed to bring to the games, a couple of events stand out. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and later Earvin "Magic" Johnson were added to the mix of players, and TV commentator Pat Riley was hired as assistant coach. Riley moved up, of course, to the head coach position, and what a marvelous job he did!

The Lakers met up with the team that has become their arch rival again in 1984. The Boston Celtics beat them in the Finals, but Kareem Abdul-Jabbar set an NBA record anyway. When the Lakers and Celtics met at the 1985 Finals at Boston Gardens, the then 37-year-old Kareem provided a mighty assist, and the Lakers finally beat their nemesis on the Celtics' own turf. The victory celebration for players and fans was something to behold!

In 2000, the Los Angeles Lakers moved their home base from the Forum in Inglewood to the Staples Center in L.A., which seems to suit them. They also hired coach Phil Jackson who, as well as former coach Pat Riley, has set all-time records in the industry As the 2000's rolled on, the Lakers incorporated some moves they call the "triangle offense", and the excitement just kept happening. Shaquille O'Neal was awarded the Finals MVP for his third consecutive year, and coach Phil Jackson got his ninth Championship Head Coach award.

Throughout their history, the Lakers behind-the-scenes life has been fraught with drama and often dissension. There are a lot of stories that have never been told (and most likely never will be). What continues to be of most interest to their fans, however, is the way they rebound from disaster, and snatch victory from almost certain defeat.

The Los Angeles Lakers have gone through some "glory days" and some fairly dark nights; key players have suffered injury or just dissatisfaction and gone elsewhere, but sometimes returned, and coaches have been both mediocre and superb. This team has a lot of history, and it's all fascinating. The bottom line right now is: the Lakers just keep on winning!

Dwight Howard - Man Or Machine?

Because of him still being so young he has enough time to basketball his game a whole lot.

He showed he can compete with the great centers of the league almost only through his athleticness. Him consistently improving his game could make him into the most dominate center of all times. Though talking about this before hand this redundant, this article should point out what a great player he is. He also shines through his humor and good sportsmanship. Both of these features are great for becoming a great player in future.

Minor League Baseball Review and Preview - Jed Lowrie

Below is a review and preview for the 2009 season of Boston Red Sox shortstop and former minor league prospect Jed Lowrie. What he did last season and what to expect in 2009. Here is what I wrote last season:

"The Red Sox have struggled to find a productive shortstop since Nomar Garciaparra was traded, and it can be argued that they didn't basketball much production in Nomar's latter Boston years anyway.Lowrie could be the answer to Boston's problems at the position.The former supplemental first-round draft choice has settled at the position after flirting with second base, and it was an appropriate indefinite move with young Dustin Pedroia enshrined at second base.The 23-year-old hit .298 last season between Double-A and basketball also posting an outstanding walk rate, 13 homers and 47 doubles.While he was not unproductive before last season, 2007 was his breakout year as a minor leaguer.Julio Lugo starts the season at shortstop, but he could be moved in a trade if Lowrie makes a strong spring training and early-season Triple-A push.At worst, he will be a quality utilityman in the near future."

Julio Lugo's struggles and injuries allowed Lowrie to claim the shortstop job and run with it late in the year. Lowrie was able to hit a respectable .258-2-46 in 260 at-bats during his rookie season. The Red Sox are apparently keeping Julio Lugo around next season, which could hinder Lowrie's ability to remain in the majors if he gets out of the gate slowly. Still, the Red Sox have to be happy with what they got from Lowrie in his first season and what to expect from him in the future.

Inherent Dangers in the Sport of Cheerleading

Levels of Safety

There are three levels of safety/injury in the sport of cheerleading in the two different cheerleading sports. Cheerleading ranks as the most dangerous womens sport in all safety areas. The first level of safety involves catastrophic injury in which involves permanent paralysis or death. The second level of safety involves injuries for which the athlete must receive hospital care. The third level of safety involves injuries which require missing or altering an athletes practice or competition schedule.

Height basketball Motion

There are logistical reasons why cheerleading is dangerous. Any activity involving height and motion involves the risk of injury. Cheerleading utilizes tumbling (motion) and basket tosses and pyramids (height and motion) and thus is inherently dangerous to some extent. Choosing to participate exposes cheerleaders to an increased risk of injury, including the risk of catastrophic injury.

Performance Areas

Cheerleaders, except in competitions, perform on surfaces designed for an entirely different sport. Basketball floors and football fields were not designed with cheerleaders in mind to even a minor degree. Even the layout of most basketball and football (and other sports) facilities are not planned with a specific cheerleading area designated, so cheerleaders are stuck performing around the edges of anther sports playing area.

Failure to Warn

One of the legal liabilities of any sport and certainly any sports injury lawsuit involves the failure to warn the participants in the activity of the dangers of their participation. There seems to be little doubt that cheerleaders, especially young cheerleaders, and their parents are not sufficiently aware of the dangers they are being exposed to basketball participation in the sport of cheerleading. While we are not in favor of the sometimes recommended scare tactic methods of warning athletes of dangers (dont create self-fulfilling prophecy psychology), there is no doubt that cheerleaders would be safer if they understood that safety practices are never to be bypassed.

Cheerleading Competitions

Cheerleading has split into two distinct sports, although some programs perform and compete in both. Cheerleading used to be an athletic activity designed to act as a support system for other sports. There was more interest in boosting school and team spirit than in increasing skill difficulty. Cheer competitions changed all that as difficulty was introduced as an important factor in judging cheer competitions.

There has been a proliferation of cheerleading associations, matching the rise of the popularity of cheerleading competitions. Often, the primary motivation for the start-up, operation and management of cheerleading associations is financial. Coaching and safety considerations, other than at their own competitions, camps and clinics can often fall by the wayside when the primary association activities are financial.

All About Plyometrics - How Plyometrics Can Improve Your Basketball Playing

You may be unsure as to what plyometrics are and what they can do for you, but that's okay. Plyometrics are merely a series of exercises designed to give explosive leg power. Doesn't that sound good for playing basketball? Explosive leg power. But you can get it and this what you do.

First plyometric exercise: Squat jumps. Stand basketball feet planted firmly and comfortably on the ground. Squat down until thighs are almost parallel to the ground. At this point, immediately jump up, driving your arms high above your head. Rest about 1 or 2 seconds then repeat. Remember to extend your ankles first before your feet leave the ground.

Second plyometric exercise: Knee tuck jumps. Get in the same position as above, except this time, from a standing position, bring your knees up as high as you can when you jump. When you repeat the exercise, pretend the ground is red hot: you want your feet to be on the ground for just a split second.

Third plyometric exercise: Bounding. Just like running except you want to really push off the ground with each step you take. Think of a superhero bounding across buildings, that's the sort of action you are doing.

These are all very simple plyometric drills, but are very effective when you do them on a regular basis. Work out with a friend: this is always very basketball to challenge each other to work harder. Do about 3 or 4 workouts a week, with good recovery time in between. Good luck!

Basketball - Changing Bad Habits to Improve Free Throw Shooting Mechanics

You may be surprised to know that once again it is the 'mind' that dictates the changing basketball any bad habits. First of all the habit must be recognized as one that causes a problem, causes pain, inefficiency, inconsistency or it may be a habit that is unappealing etc. In all the basketball shooting clinics that I orchestrate, I always ask the question "what do you think about at the moment you release the ball from the hand"? 99.9% of the time I get this answer. Either "Hope the ball goes in" or something along those lines and this is completely and utterly an incorrect thought pattern.

Most of the time the pain that comes with the old habit becomes gain with the new habit. Obviously when consciously working on breaking an old habit there will be mental and physical pain. That's why many of us would rather accept the old habit. It takes courage to break a habit, discipline to end the unwanted habit and it takes desire and motivation to fuel the process.

The following poem illustrates our friend "habit".

I am your constant companion
I am your greatest asset or heaviest burden
I will push you up to success or down to disappointment
I am at your command
Half the things you do may as well be turned over to me
For I can do them quickly, correctly and profitably.
I am easily managed, just be firm with me.
Those who are great, I have made them great.

The reason I get these incorrect answers is because the players don't recognize incorrect shooting mechanics which are a direct result of errant shots. Once you understand this concept you will become more 'mindful' of anatomical inconsistencies and you will be able to unravel destructive behaviors. This applies not only to free throw shooting but to biting finger nails, judging people, overeating, cursing etc. As I said earlier we need to become mindful by first recognizing all of our flawed shooting mechanics and I would always work on correcting my biggest problem first. In other words if your pinky finger drops one half inch on the release is not as big a problem as your shooting wrist moving sideways or laterally on or during the ball release, or a swaying sloppy elbow.

Recognizing and correcting old or bad habits stems from studies of neuroscience, cognitive therapy and cognitive science. By becoming mindful you help the brain shift from disturbing to positive behaviors. The brain actually has elasticity throughout our lives and actually changes itself as we challenge old habits. A visual would be like molding putty with our hands. (There's the reference to the "hands" again.)

The field of Neuroscience portrays to us that there is a point where we have to make a crucial choice and it must be made within the blink of an eye or about a quarter of a second. It is during this crucial moment that we choose to reject any self-defeating or poor shooting mechanic or movement.

Mindfulness meditation and cognitive therapy focus on repairing maladaptive or flawed shooting mechanics. Remember that "science rules" when it comes to shooting excellence. If we defy the laws of nature or the laws of science we lose and our efficiency is compromised. The closer we comprehend these laws the sooner we align ourselves with perfection. My whole objective behind this book is to improve your awareness of each anatomical error that causes missed shots. Remember that a missed shot is a direct result of incorrect physical action directly caused by lack of concentration or more specifically not knowing or consciously thinking of correcting a problem area like bent knuckles or floppy wrist etc. These movements result in inconsistent results.

Becoming aware of incorrect shooting mechanics or bad shooting habits is the first step, and unless we can be aware of them and challenge them before they happen, they will dictate why we shoot the way we do. And the more imbedded they are, the more they will keep returning unless we apply mindfulness and awareness of these generally mediocre mechanics. Remember that the National free throw percentage for High Schools in the US is around 65%, Colleges and Universities hover around 68% and the NBA jumps a few notches to around 72% from the line which in my estimation is still mediocrity. It is hard to believe that the best players in the world only average about 5 percentage points better than the National High school average.

A majority of this book is about seeing ourselves through our statistics as a shooter, categorizing ourselves as horrible, mediocre or excellent and making the necessary changes to elevate our status. We will explore by practicing 'mindfulness'- which is a method of training the mind to expand the scope of awareness while refining its precision- we can reach beyond the limiting or detrimental ways we constantly and unconsciously promote. You will learn how to disengage from the flawed shooting habits that undermine your potential confidence or the confidence of your players. Let's face it, every player wants to be a great shooter and scorer. Or at least they want to be recognized for their efforts and hard work. Top scorers get all the recognition unfortunately but this is a true fact. You will also learn how precise mindfulness will seek out bad habits, which will add new insight and clarity that will help you distinguish between what appears to be and what actually is. For example, I had my shooting technique filmed with a camera at 1,000 frames per second. When I reviewed this, I could tell right away the difference from what seemed to be and what really is, or the actual reality.

Moshe Feldenkrais became a pioneer in the workings of the body, specifically body movements. His method of working was through physical movement; many of his brilliant insights came from his own personal struggle to regain control of his own body especially after it was paralyzed by polio. His studies could be referred to as 'movement awareness'.

The habitual ways in which we move our bodies are ingrained or embossed into the part of the brain referred to as the 'motor cortex' which is responsible for controlling motion or body movement. Most of us have a few habits of holding or moving that limit our potential or even cause pain. For people to reach their full potential they have to break out of the rut of bad habit and this means that changes need to occur within the motor cortex, so that new neuromuscular patterns can be formed that maximize rather than limit our ability to use our bodies . When it comes to free throw shooting there is nothing more important than being aware or mindful of moving body parts. Especially the finer muscles that are responsible for moving these body parts. One major example is to be aware of the finger joints and how they are moving as the shot is released. You will be amazed at how poor the average person is at recognizing this let alone adjusting any flaw.

Listed below are areas of potential problems of shooting flaws that need to be addressed, corrected or restructured:-

1. Feet spacing too wide, too narrow, not squared which can cause alignment problems.
2. Too much or not enough knee bend.
3. Grip on ball- too much palm on ball, fingers too relaxed. Need to be firm and as wide as possible without straining. Pads of fingers ball contact only
4. Elbow too wide, either inside or outside. Usually thin, wiry or very flexible players have inside elbow.
5. Out of alignment elbow causes mis-aligned grip and vice versa.
6. Index finger not in center of ball.
7. Guide hand above ball, or anywhere but at 90 degrees to shooting thumb
8. Shooting pocket locations everywhere but in front of forehead about 2" above the head and between the eyes.
9. Lack of strength of finer muscles affects shooting pocket. Weak players shoot from chest or chin, making shot a longer release.
10. Guide hand assists the shooting hand causing skewed rotation, or even kills any rotation
11. Ball release too flat.
12. Follow through fingers point to floor.
13. Follow through fingers closed not wide as at start of shot.
14. Wrist moves in different directions at end of shot.
15. Eyes focused on rim during entire shot.
16. Shooting hand slaps guide hand after release.
17. Knuckles bend on follow through. Only joint on the hand that should bend is the wrist. Hand is frozen during whole shot. It is the control center. How can it control the shot if it is out of control itself. This fact alone is the biggest problem area affecting millions of players worldwide.
18. Angle of release is either too high or too low. Elbow touches ear(too high) or wrist is level with head after shot (too low)
19. Guide hand closes during shot release signifying 'help' action on the ball.
20. Dropping follow through before ball reaches basket. Especially from free throw line out.
21. There is more. This is enough to work on. Remember that each one of these potential flaws can cause up to a 5-6% deficiency in accuracy. If you have 5 of these flaws that you don't even recognize then you already are shooting around 70-75%. And by my standards this is as bad as shooting 50%.

I realize the information above is not super detailed but it does provide food for thought. There will be more information in future articles that may further assist your needs.

The Hook Kick - Achieving Kicking Excellence Series Volume 7

The seventh book of the Achieving Kicking Excellence series has a purple cover and focuses basketball the hook kick. I mention the purple cover because each of the books in this series has a different colored cover along with the photograph of author Shawn Kovacich illustrating the themed kick by smashing the first letter. Some people have criticized the covers because it is a bit harder to read with the first letter smashed all over the place, but on the shelf you can read the spine just fine, so I don't see a problem.

The book follows the rest of the series by containing chapters on basic anatomy, warm ups, stretching, strength, speed, and power training. These chapters are very basic and give just enough to show the reader some basics, but to prompt the reader to further their studies in these areas.

The bulk of volume seven focuses on the hook kick and ten of its main variations. Just like all of the books in this series, Kovacich included hundreds of photographs and illustrations among the text of this 236 page book. (This includes the index and pages to take notes) No other written text has as much detailed instruction on the hook kick, and I doubt any ever will. This is the definitive written guide on the execution of the hook kick and its variations.

It takes Kovacich thirty-one pages, which includes eighteen pages of full page pictures detailing every part of the kick, and one page of review photographs, to fully describe the execution of the turning hook kick. Kovacich also uses an illustration of a martini glass to help get his instruction on the path of trajectory. Like I said, this is the most detailed instruction on this kick you will find.

Kovacich then teaches ten variations. In these descriptions he uses smaller photographs, but they still illustrate the kicks very well. Each variations includes a pictorial overview and is self contained. I like this feature. If you want to review just one variation, you can go to that section of the book, review that kick, and get to practicing. It is because of this that I believe this to be an excellent basketball to have in any martial art library. This is not a book to read cover to cover for enjoyment. It is a reference text to be used to improve your kicking.

The variations include: Step-Back Hook Kick; Spinning Hook Kick; Hop/Slide Forward Hook Kick; Hop/Slide Backward Hook Kick; Front Leg Hook Kick; Back Leg Hook Kick; Switch Hook Kick; Off-Setting Hook Kick; Jump Turning Hook Kick; 540 Degree Jump Turning Hook Kick; and the Spinning Hook Kick with the left leg. (all other kicks are shown with the right leg only)

Besides the martini glass, Kovacich also uses diagrams of a watch face and illustrations of a top to get his points across. He also includes a smorgasbord of "notes" that cover many important points regarding kicking. He also provides some basic training and practice methods and a trouble shooting guide to assist you in gaining the most out of your training and to increase your kicking skills. Like the other books in the series, Kovacich finishes with illustrations of some hook kick applications.

This is an excellent study guide for learning the hook kick. It sands alone for the hook kick, but more importantly is part of a series that has to be the most detailed examination of kicking ever in print. This series is a fantastic resource for all martial artists. Even if your kicking style is a bit different from that of Kovacich's, you will still find instruction that will help you improve and assist in your teaching if you instruct.

If you own the entire series, you will find a little redundancy in the volumes. Those are the chapters I mentioned early on in this review. However, the detailed analysis and descriptions of each of Kovacich's ten primary kicks makes this series the excellent resource it is. I have all ten volumes in my library and am looking forward to the companion volumes Kovacich is working on now to be released in 2009.

NBA Age Limit Unfair to Young Men

The foundation - and a flimsy one it may turn out to be - of the proposition to raise the legal age limit of the NBA to 21 is that both the league and the colleges will be best served by the restriction.

The colleges will benefit because the great players that would otherwise be pros will be plying their talents for their dear old schools for an additional year, raising the level of the college game. And the NBA will benefit because rookies coming in will be armed with the requisite skills and savoir-faire to better represent themselves and, by extension, the NBA's product.

These seem to be sound arguments, on both sides. basketball only thing they ignore is the voice of the one in the middle - the athlete himself.

Let's say basketball are a 20-year-old college basketball player, and gifted. You're six-eight or six-nine, you can run like a horse and fly like a bird, and you're busting at the seams to test your mettle in the crucible of the NBA.

But the powers-that-be say you need to wait another year - for your own good, of course. Even though you're old enough to be sent overseas to fight and possibly to die, you're not quite mature enough for the rigors of professional basketball.

Another year of school is what you need, they agree - another year of seasoning and sophistication. Never mind that you have yet to see the inside of a classroom - that the only two buildings on campus you've visited are the field house and the cafeteria.

Your university is all for you staying - at least your coach and the fans are - but you can't see how hanging around for another year is going to make you any smarter. And for the life of you, you can't see how one more year at State U will satisfy the people who are always shouting about the importance of higher education.

No, you're no scholar, but you can't help but get the idea that you're being used.

You see that your college is getting your services for another year when you could be offering them on the open market. And you figure out that the NBA is keeping its future labor down on the farm, cultivating it at the college's expense. But since the college is raking in millions in revenue from its basketball program...

The age-limit restriction is patently unfair to the athletes, and maybe even an illegal violation of their right to earn a living.

Los Angeles Lakers - From the Down Times Until Now

You do not have to follow basketball to know who the Los Angeles Lakers are. The Lakers are one of the most well known teams on the NBA. They do hold a number of records, but throughout their history, there have been a number of bad years. Through basketball team selection and basketball the team has fought to get themselves to where they are today.

In the beginning, the Lakers faced a number of difficulties - they won some and they lost some. There were no championship titles or records won by the team - not in the early days.

Originally founded in 1946, the Lakers were known as the Detroit Lakers, as they were based out of Detroit, Michigan. Shortly later, they moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota. This move was a good one for them, as this is where they won their first championship game - as a matter-of-fact - they won five when they were the Minneapolis Lakers.

Finally, in 1960, the Lakers moved to their home town of Los Angeles. The first decade was a tough ride for the team, as they could not even get into the NBA finals.

The next decade did not look much brighter for the Los Angeles Lakers. In the 1970's they won a title, which was definitely better than the previous 10 years, but that was it.

In the 1980's the team started to make a turn for the better. During this decade is when Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar - two of the biggest names in the NBA - played for the Lakers. Additionally, Coach Pat Riley coached the team on team-work and helped them jump over their hurdles. During this time, the Los Angeles Lakers won five additional championships, and had their highest number of wins in one given season.

Like any roller coaster, there was a down-slope coming. The 1990's proved to be an uneventful year for the Lakers. Not to say there was nothing to talk about, but compared to the 80's, nothing spectacular happened.

Finally, in the 21st century, things are really beginning to look up for the Lakers. They now have players like Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant, along with Coach Phil Jackson. Already, in just eight years, they have won five NBA finals.

The turn-around, of events, over the past decade, has captured the attention of many fans. The Lakers fans are not your typical fan, but are die-hard fans as they have watched their team struggle and come out of it with shining colors.

At the end of their most recent season, the Lakers held one of the highest number of records in NBA history. One of which was given to them for having the highest number of wins, ever, at over 2,900 wins.

They also hold records for the highest percentage (60%) of won games and appearing in the Finals 29 times. One fete, for them personally, to beat is the number of championship wins held by their rivals - the Boston Celtics. The Lakers are only three championship wins away, but this would be a grand accomplishment for the team.

The amount of talent that has passed through the Los Angeles Lakers is phenomenal. There have been 14 Hall of Fame players, and 4 Hall of Fame coaches, throughout their history. The combination of this talent and coaching has brought the team to where they are today.
