My high school coach once told me that there is a difference between a shooter and a scorer. So, let me explain basketball you how a scorer can average over 10 points a game.

A shooter will stand outside the three point line or close to it and shoot from that position during the entire game. However, a scorer will take advantage of finding a variety of ways to get the basketball in the hoop.

So let's just start with the scorer position, outside the three point line. Are you good at shooting threes? If not, this is not an option for you. You will have to shoot and hit at least 4 threes to get 12 points. But let's just say you get lucky tonight and nail one. So now you have 3 points.

We've already established that your shooting range is not that great. So make sure when you are getting in position to take a shot, you are in closer to the basket. So now you take a jumper a little closer and it goes in. Now you have 5 points.

However, jump shooting is just one way to score. Next time you get the ball you find yourself again behind the three point line. No problem. Give your opponent an up fake and drive to the basket for a lay-up. Now there is 2 more points, 7 total.

You are heading back on defense and you anticipate a pass and make a steal. You go in for a wide open lay-up. There you go for another 2 for 9 points total.

Another trip down the court on offense you seem to can not get yourself away from the 3 point line. No problem again. You penetrate in and on your release you are fouled. You have 2 free throws and you make both. You have reached your goal of over 10 points in a game. You have 11.

Leonards Hope - A Love For Basketball

With the rain falling against the pavement like an out of tune musical instrument I found myself walking next to an older gentlemen who had clearly not taken the easy path in life. As the rain drops lit up his tattered basketball face, the gentleman managed to glance in my direction and under a muted monotonic voice he opened my eyes to lives great adventures. Standing together under the cover of a Portland city bus stop, two ordinary strangers came together to share in our common passion-basketball.

It was at this moment, I discovered my new friend was a basketball legend in the great state of Utah in the early 60's. He had walked through life's journey guided by the comfort of a bouncing rubber basketball and a dream to be noticed by one of Oregon's many high basketball institutions. Yet, struggles of the street had stabbed my friend; this was clear by his rundown appearance. Leonard-I would come to know him by-had left the confines of his small Utah town as a legend and was transplanted in the heart of the Northwest to pursue 'hope' and 'opportunity' to better his life through the game of basketball.

Not unlike Leonard, I too traveled through life with a found optimism the game of basketball could provide. As we both stood under the bus stop and watched as the rain continued to pound the passing cars on Martin Luther King Avenue, it was clear basketball had provided me with so much and failed embrace Leonard. You see I had found some success as a varsity basketball coach at a young age and later as an author of a series of E-books and founder of a basketball resources website dedicated to providing inexpensive resources to future coaches around the country. In a harsh splash of reality, the integrity of the game had challenged the dreams of us both and walked two total strangers to the breaking point of opportunity. Volleyball History - When Did It Start?

Volleyball is a very popular sport today. There are many intramural teams basketball also competitive teams around the world. But, when and where did this popular sport begin? The history of volleyball is fascinating, it is interesting to see it's humble beginnings and the changes that it experienced through the years.

The man that invented volleyball is named William G Morgan. He was a sports instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association, also known as YMCA. Originally the YMCA introduced a new sport that we know today as basketball. Morgan saw that the physical contact of basketball along with the fast pace tired the older businessmen that enjoyed participating in the games. So, he created a new sport with less contact and less court movement which he called "mintonette." This game eventually turned into the game of volleyball.

Morgan played the game with members of YMCA for about a year before he decided to present it to a group of YMCA physical education directors. In 1896 the game of mintonette was presented to the directors and they suggested that he change the name to "volley ball" since the game consisted of vollying the ball back and forth over the net. The first official volleyball game was playing on July 7, 1896 at Springfield College.

The history of volleyball shows that Morgan's original game of mintonette resembled the game of badminton. It was played on a rectangular court with a net across the center of the court. The teams were split up so that there was not contact with the other team at all-- each team was placed on either side of the net. Players would use their hands to beat the ball back and forth over the net. The ball would continue to be in play until it was missed and hit the floor. Points could be earned when the opposite team could not return the ball.

As volleyball history continued, the rules changed slightly and became more defined. Officials with YMCA created a rule book that included details about the court size, ball size, and scoring system. It eventually morphed into what we know as volleyball today.

Should I Buy an Adjustable Basketball Goal Or a Fixed Height Basketball Hoop?

In the past 30 years adjustable basketball goals have become basketball main stream fixture in the driveways and backyards of millions of American homes. For most interested in purchasing and installing a basketball goal at home, the benefits of choosing an adjustable goal for their young child are clear. For others, the decision to choose adjustable or fixed height goal is a matter of debate. Below I have outlined several points to consider when making this decision for your home, park or school playground.

An important fact to consider when making this decision is the ages of the children who will be playing on the goal. If any of the children using the goal will be under the age of 10, any organized basketball games he or she may be involved in will most certainly be played at a goal height lower than 10'. Usually in a case like this it is clear that an adjustable goal is a must. However, it is important to point out that in certain cases where only one age group will be using the basketball goal, a fixed height goal may be purchased resulting in considerable cost savings. Most fixed height goals are manufactured in such a way that the extension arm is bolted or "fixed" onto the post using bolts. At first, the arm and backboard basketball be bolted at a lower height for the child. When the child gets old enough to play games at regulation 10' height, the bolts can be loosened and the goal permanently raised to 10'. When multiple age groups are involved, it is certainly most convenient to go with an adjustable goal because rim height adjustments can be made quickly and easily.

Young children will learn proper shooting technique more effectively at a lowered goal height. One of the most compelling arguments for choosing an adjustable goal for young hoopsters is improved fundamental skill development. It is impossible for most 5-6 year olds to shoot a basketball (even using a jr. ball) with proper form up to a 10' high goal. Asking a kid to do so usually produces two results. First, the child often develops poor shooting habits, such as shooting the ball with both hands like a two hand push shot, between the legs granny shot or other. Second, typically after some time, the lack of success the child experiences working at an unreachable goal results in discouragement and ultimately loss of interest. With a lowered rim height children will remain engaged and can be taught the fundamentals that will provide a solid base for a lifetime of good shooting technique.

An adjustable basketball goal will increase time spent on the court. I often hear parents say "I don't want my kids just out there playing dunkball" While I can certainly understand this concern, it should be pointed out that for every moment spent on the court, some type of skill set is being used. Even if older children choose at times to lower the goal for "dunk time", they are still dribbling, passing, catching and ultimately, improving those skills at the same time. I have seen first hand the quality of basketball improve in the local communities who have embraced the idea of quality adjustable basketball goals both in public facilities and at private homes. In these communities you will regularly find groups of kids in driveways and parks playing basketball and yes, often dunkball. I have seen this pay dividends for most of these communities in the form of improved high school basketball teams with positive post season results.

Whether you choose an adjustable basketball goal or fixed height basketball hoop for your court, remember that in a world dominated by video games, mp3 players, cell phones and texting any opportunity given to a child for true "play" is a positive one.
